kate mcgravie, artist

I am an artist and an Art & Design teacher from Edinburgh. I love teaching and enjoy making artwork in my studio at weekends and during holidays.

My creative direction is primarily driven by memory, in particular that of my own childhood, family and home: making connections with people and places and the passage of time. My reflections on icons of childhood and passing ephemeral moments are observed and captured initially through photography: I am recording and abstracting my space.

On a formal level I pay close attention to layering, surface qualities, line and texture with an interest in staining, sewn line, grain, printed surfaces, fabric weave, blurring edges and sharpening edges.  Using the stitched line I make connections / divisions between people and places – between subtlety and depth and between light and dark.
